to practise and fine tune all aspects of their game. Golf Digest’s
editor, Stuart McLean was even quoted as saying that this practice
facility “..has got to be one of the best in the country
in terms of ambience and facilities.”
Selborne’s practice facilities are perfectly
complimented by an indoor golf academy which gives golfers the
opportunity to warm up before their game.
Golf Lessons
Trevor Wilkes is the resident teaching professional at the Selborne
Hotel, Spa and Golf Estate and has been rated by Golf Digest Magazine
as one of the countries top 20 teaching professional.
A background on Trevor
Trevor Wilkes, a talented young South African golfer, turned Pro
in 1950, in the same year as Gary Player and after finishing their
apprenticeships together the two youngsters set off for Europe
in 1956. They both hit the winners circle that year, Gary winning
the Dunlop Masters at Sunningdale and Trevor the Daks at Wentworth.
The two also featured in a dramatic finish at the S.A. Open at
Durban Country Club in 1968, Gary triumphing on that occasion
although it was Trevor who headed the money list at the end of
the year. During those years, it was Trevor that everyone believed
would be the “better player”, but history has its
own way of telling its story!
After 18 years, 4 tournament victories and numerous top 4 finishes
on Pro circuits on four continents, Trevor retired and returned
permanently to his home, South Africa, where he became a full
time teacher. Trevor has over the years, acquired not only a South
African, but also international reputation for his teaching skills,
both on and off the course. He is a simply brilliant “golfing
teacher” and well-known for his patience and motivation
in this awesome game! In 1998 Trevor was awarded KZN Teacher of
the Year Award.
